Essential Transport Information

Travelling by Air

Edinburgh International Airport is conveniently located eight miles west of the city centre and is served by many of the low cost airlines as well as some of the major international airlines including:

British Airways

Arriving and departing passengers can travel to and from the airport via bus or taxi.

The Airlink Bus - The Airport Bus link service operates daily from outside the Airport’s terminal building at UK Arrivals and transports passengers to the city centre within 25 minutes. The buses are scheduled to run every 10-15 minutes at peak time. An adult fare costs a £3.00 (single) or £5.00 (return).

Edinburgh Shuttle – This shared transport service operates between Edinburgh Airport and any address within the city centre boundary. The service runs regularly throughout the day (approximately every 15 to 30 minutes) and offers fares as low as £8 for a single journey. For more information

Taxis - There are three taxis ranks that operate from the airport and are all easily located from the Arrivals terminal building. A typical journey time to the city centre is approximately 25 minutes and fares will vary depending on your final destination. Prices should range from £15 and £25.

Travelling by Train

Edinburgh has two train stations, Haymarket and Waverley. Waverley is the main station which is located in the heart of the city and all trains arriving from and departing to London operate from Waverley.

The Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) line is the fastest intercity railway in the UK and it’s service operates daily from London (Kings Cross) to Edinburgh (Waverley) with a journey time of 4.5 hours.

Both train stations have great rail links to other major cities in the country such as York, Newcastle, Inverness and Aberdeen, which are all about 2 hours away. The First ScotRail service provides a shuttle from Glasgow to Waverley station and has a journey time of 50 minutes.

Travelling by Coach

Travelling to Edinburgh by bus or coach is an ideal travel option if you are on a budget. All major cities throughout the country provide regularly services to and from the capital this includes the following companies:
